Area of Practice:Criminal Law Barrister

A crime specialist, is instructed in all manner of the most serious types of cases.  A Recorder with a certificate to sit in crime and authorised in all types of serious sexual offences.

Following twelve months’ commercial pupillage at 4 Pump Court in London, in 1985 I returned to Exeter, where I had studied Classics at University.

For ten years I practised in all areas of general common law, including civil, family and crime.

Since 1990 I have specialised exclusively in crime and, prior to taking silk, I had built up an extensive junior practice both prosecuting and defending in all types of criminal cases including serious cases of violence, drug offences, fraud and sexual offences (particularly those involving children).

I am a member of the Criminal Bar Association and of the Local Criminal Justice Board.

Cases of Note:

As a junior I was involved in several high profile cases such as:

R-v-C (murder of babies) in which I was originally instructed as junior for the Crown;

R-v-J (Munchausen by proxy murder of baby by mother);

R-v-H (14 defendants charged with importation of £3m worth of drugs);

R-v-C and others (Customs and Excise fraud and corruption);

R-v-W and P (Diversion fraud).

R-v-M and others (multi-handed, multi generational child sexual abuse);

R-v-C and others (multi generational child abuse).

Since taking silk I have developed a wide ranging practice including cases of the utmost complexity and public interest. My practice extends throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Bristol and Sussex. I have appeared in numerous murder/manslaughter trials both for the prosecution and defence as well as cases involving serious sexual offences and local government legislation.

I have conducted a complex legal argument regarding an ASBO. I have also conducted a test case for the local authority in relation to Housing Benefit legislation. Recently I have been instructed in a number of murder cases including, most notably:

R-v-S (baby shaking);

R-v-P (baby murder);

R-v-J (conspiracy to murder long-term partner where the defence was that she was not part of any conspiracy);

R-v-W (murder of long-term partner where issue was murder or suicide).

Further I have a diverse defence practice. I have secured complete acquittals in murder cases in Exeter and Truro (R-v-B; R-v-McC); successfully run the defence of diminished responsibility and lack of intent in R-v-P,R-v-K and R-v-O’B. I have also been instructed to defend those accused of serious sexual offences, R-v-K; R-v-P, R-v-Bl; distraction robberies (R-v-R), causing death by dangerous driving (R-v-G) and in cases involving the most sensitive issues of public interest immunity.
