I was called to the Bar in 1996 and joined Walnut House in 1997 from 39 Essex Street in London. I studied law at Cambridge and spent 18 months thereafter studying history at Harvard. I was awarded a scholarship to Grays Inn for the Bar Vocational Course and subsequently spent a year travelling through Africa before embarking on a career on the Western Circuit. I judge mooting competitions at Exeter University and participate in the Bar’s Human Rights for Schools initiative. I accept instructions in all manner of criminal cases; my work is divided evenly between defending and prosecuting. I appear in trials on a daily basis in the Crown Courts at Exeter, Plymouth, Truro, Taunton, Bristol and beyond. I cover the full range of criminal work from murders, rapes and arsons to frauds, thefts, child cruelty and ordinary assaults. I am particulary experienced in dealing with serious child abuse cases. I am well adept in representing clients who suffer from learning difficulties and other mental illnesses. I also appear to prosecute and defend in specialist areas (e.g. local authority work, fisheries, health and safety, food standards etc.) I also have experience in handling court martials, prison adjudications and inquests. R -v- L. Defending in a trial where the client was accused of male rape. R -v- HJ. Led defence junior in a case where a woman was charged with numerous counts of child abuse against her own children. The case involved a defence of Munchausen by proxy. R -v- W. Led Junior defending a care home worker accused of multiple counts of sexual abuse. Many of the vicitms were only able to communicate by using a Alternative Agumentative Communication Device. R -v-S. Defending a father accused of a Section 18 assault on his baby. R -v-T. Led junior prosecuting in an armed robbery trial that included the theft of rare and priceless stamps.
